The plant requires minimal watering, as it is adapted to survive in arid conditions. Water your cactus deeply once a month during the growing season, and reduce watering to once every two to three months during the winter months. Fertilize your Golden Barrel Cactus once a year with a cactus-specific fertilizer. Cover plants prior to a cold event with an old sheet or frost fabric to ward off frost and direct contact with snow. As an added layer of defense, run a lit string of holiday lights under the sheet to warm the area slightly. Try to prevent the lights from touching the fabric with the use of stakes or other supports. The Bishop’s Cap Cactus needs surprisingly little maintenance. Soil should be a specific mix made for cacti – usually potting soil combined with sand. Direct sunlight should be avoided – it will do well in a bright room in indirect light. Watering should be light, and you should aim to keep the soil dry.
During the fall and winter, only water your cactus with the soil is completely dry (at least the length of your finger if you were to stick it in the soil) and crumbly to the touch. Do not mist your cacti. Cacti do not absorb water through their bodies, as they do not have leaves like other plants. They prefer to have water applied to their
Once the stem has callused, fill the pot with a rooting medium and moisten slightly. Cut the end and dip it in a rooting hormone. Plant the cutting so that it is just below the soil. Keep the soil moistened and in bright light while you mist the plant daily for about two months till the roots appear.

Repotting. Repot roughly every two years, using a container that is only slightly bigger than the plant. Buy cactus compost or blend a free-draining, rich growing medium: for instance, peat-free loam-based compost, coir, and grit. Top dress with grit.
